So, after clicking through all the links in the syllabus for class, and checking out all the sites, I've got a sentence or two to say about each one. First off, the relief shading webpage was pretty good. I could tell what was going on, what they were doing, etc. Except for the yellow. I couldn't make out the yellow bits to save my life. Then again, if noone else has trouble with it, it might be that there's just certain shades of yellow I can't see very well :) Having a page of relief-shading related software was pretty nice, especially since it's broken down into three great categories - "Low Cost" "GIS" and "Graphics". The page is also easy to read - and it's BLACK WITH WHITE TEXT! Oh no! I still might change over the theme of my page, I'm not sure.
So anyways, the next page was USGS tutorial...so i opened the real page at the same time. I've determined that the engine powering the USGS interactive map is only about five years behind the technology that drives Google Earth. The engine was clunky and slow, but aside from that, it has some interesting data in it that you can't get in Google Earth - basically, instead of a full-spread satellite map, it starts off with relief maps of the area you're looking at, which is kinda neat.
I didn't go to the GIS community page, it had a $ next to it - and that scared me off, seeing how I bought a $500 laptop, $150+ in books, and $150+ in software already for the class - it's broken my budget for the semester HORRIBLY. And when I say horribly, I mean almost irrecoverably. So if you all hear about me jumping from a bridge, you know why.
Anyways, Typebrewer was pretty neat, same with colorbrewer. i can see how both are gonna be pretty important for our upcoming project and coursework. Not a whole lot to say about them, they were pretty self-explaining and easy to use. I rather liked how you could adjust the sliders in Typebrewer and see the changes in realtime. Kinda neat, I think.
Anyways, not looking forward to work then class tonight (but I always have work then class, so it's nothing new). The only bad part is having lessons straight from 2-6:30, then going straight to GMU, and getting to class 2 minutes before it starts, and our class doesn't take a break. It just means that I don't get lunch or dinner unless I eat before work, which I rarely do, because I'm usually not hungry by then.
I also wanted to post up a copy of the practice I did in illustrator...but I can't figure out how to post pictures - is it just a straight HTML tag like < IMG SRC > etc? Or is there some funny-ness. Maybe I'll try and figure it out, I did up a Ford GT Supercar. Not the most curvy thing in the world, but it works nicely :)
